Leaving Home: What Parents Need to Know

The task of preparing adolescents to leave home is a huge responsibility. Often, parents worry about whether or not their child will be successful and whether or not they have done a “good job”. Sadness, loneliness, protectiveness, fear and grief can also accompany this transitional stage of life.

This presentation will provide parents with information about the skills that are necessary to help your child and yourself navigate this life passage. We will focus on the emotional stages and behavioral challenges of parenting a young adult. Topics include communication issues, changing belief systems, individuation, letting go and moving on with your life.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Ellyn Herb, Ph.D., CEDS is a licensed psychologist and certified eating disorders specialist. She has been in private practice since 1983 providing services to girls and women struggling with eating disorders, body image concerns, depression, anxiety, and phase of life issues. Dr. Herb is also an Adjunct Professor at John F. Kennedy University where she trains beginning therapists and provides continuing education workshops for licensed professionals. Dr. Herb provides both individual and group therapy in her San Jose office and offers consultation and training to those professionals wanting more training in the treatment of disordered eating and body image concerns.
